A. D. Betts Papers, . 1847-1917

A. D. Betts was a minister of the North Carolina Conference, Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and Confederate chaplain. The collection includes 43 volumes of membership books, 1847-1908, kept by Betts during his ministry at various places in eastern North Carolina. They contain Sunday school records, accounts of mission subscriptions, sermon texts, accounts with congregations, and varied other information. Other items included are his diary, 1850-1852, as a student at the Colton School, Cumberland County, N.C.; accounts while at the University of North Carolina, 1852-1855; diary, 1861, as a minister in Brunswick County, N.C.; a roll, 1861-1864, with information about soldiers in the 30th North Carolina Infantry Regiment, Confederate States of America, of which he was chaplain; a notebook with biographical information about other chaplains in the Army of Northern Virginia; and scattered correspondence from family and friends.
